Fire extinguisher cabinets come in plastic, aluminum, galvanized steel, or cold-rolled steel. Door openings may be glass or plastic.
Cabinet Styles
Fire extinguisher cabinets may be wall mounted, semi-recessed, or fully-recessed. A fully-recessed fire extinguisher cabinet has limited space for the fire extinguisher. A semi-recessed fire extinguisher cabinet has more room for the fire extinguisher.
Fire-Rated and Non-Rated Cabinets
A non-rated fire extinguisher cabinet is not insulated against fire. It is designed for a fire extinguisher that is not fire rated.
A fire-rated fire extinguisher cabinet is certified and is insulated to withstand a minimum time in a fire. Local regulations may require that fire extinguisher cabinets have the Warnock Hersey certification, which indicates that the cabinet meets building codes and product safety and performance standards.
Cabinet Dimensions
Dimensions of fire extinguisher cabinets vary according to the size of the extinguisher and whether they are surface mounted, semi-recessed, or fully-recessed.
For example, one surface mounted Kidde fire extinguisher cabinet is 10 5/16 inches wide and 24-3/8 inches high. It is sized to hold a 10-pound fire extinguisher. A surface mounted Kidde fire extinguisher cabinet for a 20-pound extinguisher is 12 inches wide and 20-3/8 inches high. A semi-recessed Kidde cabinet for a 10-pound extinguisher is 11 ¾ inches wide and 26 ¾ inches high.
When choosing fire extinguisher cabinets, you must make sure they are right sizes for the fire extinguishers you need and for the space you have.
ADA Compliant Fire Extinguisher Cabinets
According to the requirements of the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990), fire extinguisher cabinets must not protrude more than four inches, unless they are mounted less than 27 inches above the floor. Local building or fire codes may have additional requirements. Semi-recessed (which usually protrude 2 ½ inches) and fully-recessed fire extinguisher cabinets can comply with this requirement. Surface mounted cabinets are not ADA compliant, unless they are mounted less than 27 inches above the floor.
The maximum height of the cabinet handle for ADA compliance is a 54 inches above the floor.
